SERIES: Jobs in the Garden June 2022
Posted by Original on 1st Jun 2022
Summer has arrived and with this month having the longest day of the year (June 21st), we’re excited to share with you our tips for making the most out of your garden this June. The extra light and warmth encourages bursts of growth as well as lots of visitors to the garden.
1. At this time of year, the lawn is actively growing and requires weekly mowing to keep it looking it’s best.
2. Offer some support to your tall growing perennials. The warmer months means they will be in full bloom and therefore vulnerable to collapse. Keep them upright and prevent any damage from wind and rain by using frames or canes and tying the stems securely.
3. An increase in sunny weather means that your greenhouse is likely to overheat. Keep your plants cool by opening doors and vents to circulate the air. To prevent scorch, use blinds or apply shade paint. On hot days, damp down your greenhouse to increase humidity.
4. Start to plant your summer and autumn flowering containers. You can get really creative with these, maybe choosing differing plant heights and contrasting colours.
5. Bursts of growth occur during the summer months and these aren’t always from the plants you want in your garden! Keep on top of weeding, your plants shouldn’t have to complete for water, light and nutrients.
6. Harvest lettuce, radish, other salads and early potatoes.
7. Start to pinch out tomatoes, this encourages branching on the tomato plants. By cutting of part of the main stem, you encourage the plant to grow two new ones.
