SERIES: Jobs in the Garden - December 2022
Posted by Original on 1st Dec 2022
The shortest day of the year is fast approaching but getting out in the garden this month is sure to be rewarding with the beautiful crisp mornings and low afternoon sun that winter can bring. Protect plants from frosts with insulation or move them into a greenhouse with a heater. With not too many jobs left to do this year, take some time for fireside garden planning.
1. Dig over your empty borders and prepare your soil for next year’s planting.
2. Protect terracotta pots from cracking in freezing weather by bringing them indoors or wrapping in bubble polythene.
3. Keep feeding those hungry birds, they will be very grateful!
4. Harvest your leeks, parsnips, winter cabbage, sprouts and remaining root crops. These are all great for making some yummy warming soups!
5. Now is the perfect time to prune fruit trees to maintain an open, balanced structure and encourage quality fruit production.
6. Insulate outdoor taps or turn them off at the mains.
7. Reduce the watering of your house plants.
8. Pile straw around the base of tender shrubs and climbers to protect them from falling temperatures.
9. Collect brightly coloured stems and berries for your Christmas decorations.
10. From your armchair carefully plan your vegetable garden for next year, order your flower seeds and take inventory of tools and equipment that you need.
